‘God Placed Me In This Spot For A Reason’

State quarterback Kamario Taylor staying grounded as outside attention on him grows.
STARKVILLE – On The Paul Finebaum Show Monday afternoon, Kamario Taylor once again sat in the spotlight. It's become a familiar place for the young Mississippi State quarterback as two elite performances to begin the 2026 season have served to garner national attention.
Taylor was explaining to Finebaum why he decided to play his college football just a few miles up the road from his hometown of Macon, Mississippi, when he offered up this:
"Starkville is one of a kind when it's on fire," Taylor said.
Well, it's early in this year's campaign, but Starkville is certainly already ablaze. It's Taylor that's served as the match that's lit the flame.
State's early success isn't because of Taylor alone. The defense has allowed just one touchdown so far and the offense as a whole has been incredible, averaging 620.5 yards per game.
However, Taylor's position, personality, versatile skill set, Mississippi roots and production have quickly made him the face of the Maroon and White.
"I know what I signed up for and I wouldn't change it for anything in the world," Taylor said. "I know regardless of how anyone feels, God placed me in this spot for a reason and everything He put on me, I'm able to carry."
Taylor has certainly carried seemingly everything with ease to this point. And while the hype surrounding Taylor has grown based on his electric start to this year, it bears remembering there were already big expectations on him before he ever took a snap in 2026. None of that has been a burden at all.
If you haven't seen it with your own eyes, just look at the numbers for proof. Taylor heads into this weekend's Southeastern Conference opener at South Carolina fourth nationally in total yards per game (363) and points responsible for (48). He became the first Bulldog quarterback since Dak Prescott to open a season with seven or more passing touchdowns and one or more rushing scores over a season's first two games.
The exciting thing is Taylor is only getting started, and he has so many opportunities ahead to continue to show he was made for this moment.
The next challenge for Taylor comes Saturday against the Gamecocks. Ahead of the game, it seems the whole country is starting to jump on the Taylor bandwagon.
But the ones who've watched him grow from Macon to MSU don't have to jump on. They've been riding with Taylor all along and believe the best is yet to come.
"We're two weeks in," State head coach Jeff Lebby said. "We've got an unbelievable test against a great defense that plays with their hair on fire, gets after the quarterback, and has a ton of different pass rush ability in their front. And so for us, it's about taking the next step. [Taylor] had an unbelievable morning [at practice Monday]. He was in the building all day [Sunday], and it's about how he prepares. He's going to prepare the right way and he's going to be ready to roll. Not a single thing he does surprises me."
