Calyn Adams tallied her seventh multi-hit game of the year on Friday, going 2-for-3 at the plate.
State Falls In Game One Against South Carolina
April 07, 2017 | Softball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – In the opening game of the weekend, the Mississippi State Bulldogs (27-13, 2-8 SEC) dropped a hard-fought 3-0 battle to the South Carolina Gamecocks (23-14, 3-9 SEC) on Friday night at Nusz Park.
The Dogs were led by a two-hit performance from Calyn Adams, her seventh multi-hit game of the year. Reggie Harrison recorded her second triple of the season, tying for the team lead, while Caroline Seitz and Bevia Robinson each recorded a hit on the night.
Holly Ward pitched all seven frames for the Dogs, recording five strikeouts and walking one.
After a scoreless first inning from both teams, South Carolina struck first with a double steal of second and home, going up 1-0. An inning later, the Gamecocks would earn a RBI single to left field with two runners on to bring home their second run of the game.
The game would turn into a pitcher's duel for the next three frames until USC hit a solo home run to lead off the seventh, putting the score at 3-0. The Dogs would put a runner on with one out thanks to a walk drawn by Morgan Bell, but USC's defense held strong and closed out the contest, taking game one of the series.
The Bulldogs and Gamecocks will square off again tomorrow in game two of the weekend. First pitch is set for noon CT for MSU's annual White Out Game. The first 250 fans will receive a free white "Vanntastic" t-shirt and can still pick up MSU Softball emoji magnets that will be given out all weekend.
