Diamond Dawgs Complete Sunday Sweep Of South Alabama, Columbia
March 12, 2017 | Baseball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State (10-6) had a flare for the dramatics Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field to sweep a doubleheader.
In the opening game, Brant Blaylock's RBI-single in the ninth inning gave the Bulldogs a 5-4 walk-off win over Columbia. In the second game, MSU made it three straight wins with an 8-6 decision over South Alabama. Brent Rooker broke a 4-4 tie and kick-started a four-run eighth inning by hitting his fourth home run of the season.
"So proud of our guys today," head coach Andy Cannizaro said. "It was a long day. We played 18 innings of outstanding baseball. College baseball games are hard to win. You have to beat the other team by playing smart, fundamentally sound baseball. We showed some good perseverance to do that."
GAME ONE: MSU 5, Columbia 4
The Bulldogs appeared to be in good shape after taking a 4-1 lead in the sixth inning. The Lions pushed across three scores in the eighth inning to tie the contest.
Denver McQuary drew his first career start for the Bulldogs. The freshman right-hander was lifted after a leadoff walk in the fifth inning. McQuary allowed two hits and one run (earned), with six strikeouts and five walks.
The Bulldogs erased a 1-0 deficit with a single score in the fifth inning and three scores in the sixth inning. Jacob Barton worked the Bulldog out of a tight spot in the fifth inning and pitched well until the Lions got to him in the eighth inning.
Blaylock got things going in the fifth inning with a one-out single. Blaylock then took two bases on Columbia's only error in the contest. Hunter Stovall hit a game-tying sacrifice fly.
In the sixth inning, walks to Luke Alexander and Rooker got things going. Cody Brown followed with a full-count, two-out, two-run single back up the middle. Blaylock followed with an RBI-single for a critical insurance score.
Barton gave way to Ryan Cyr after back-to-back hits by Columbia in the eighth inning. Cyr followed and was quickly touched for an RBI-single and two-run double.
Spencer Price (2-1) struck out the side in the eighth inning and worked around a walk and a hit in the ninth inning for the win.
In the home half of the ninth inning, Brown hit a leadoff triple and hurried home on Blaylock's hit through the ride side.
MSU finished with nine hits. Blaylock had his first three-hit game at MSU, while Alexander and Brown each had two hits.
"Brant has really come a long way in the last couple of weeks," Cannizaro said. "He is really having some confident at-bats. He really had a big part in each of our scoring innings."
Columbia finished with seven hits. Ben Porter and Randell Kanemaru each had two hits.
GAME TWO: MSU 8, South Alabama 6
The Bulldogs again let a 4-1 lead slip away in the second game.
MSU built that lead by erasing a 1-0 deficit with four runs in the sixth inning. Stovall walked and Jake Mangum singled to start the at-bat. After a sacrifice bunt, Ryan Gridley hit a sacrifice fly to tie the game. Following an intentional walk, an RBI-single by Brown gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead.
Blaylock was then hit by a pitch forcing in a run and Dustin Skelton followed with an RBI-single.
Sophomore right-hander Peyton Plumlee threw 5.1 innings, allowing five hits and a run (earned), with four strikeouts and a walk. Trysten Barlow followed Plumlee to the mound. Graham Ashcraft (2-0) threw two innings to get the win, while Jake Mangum got the final two outs to earn a save in his pitching debut.
"The thing with Peyton is he really challenges hitters," Cannizaro said. "He isn't going to make a lot of mistakes on the mound. You are going to have earn it against him. We have needed some strong pitching starts and we got two of them today."
After USA rallied to tie the contest in the seventh inning, Rooker broke the tie with his no-doubter to left center. Brown and Tanner Poole each drew walks before Stovall delivered a critical two-run double to right field. Mangum and Alexander followed with hits, with Alexander's hit bringing home another run.
State finished with 10 hits. Mangum, Alexander, Rooker and Skelton each had multiple hits.
MSU will return to the field to conclude their weather-influenced weekend on Monday vs. Columbia with first pitch set for 10 a.m. Admission will also be free for Monday's contest at Dudy Noble.
