
State Rally Falls Short In Weekend Finale

The loss caps a 3-1 weekend for the Diamond Dawgs as MSU moves to 6-3 overall on the year. Marist improved to 4-3 overall and 2-2 on the weekend with the win.
The Red Foxes jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the top of the fourth with three multi-run frames, but the Bulldogs didn't flinch as a combined seven runs in the fifth, sixth and seventh brought State to within one run heading into the eighth.
Marist started things off with a pair of runs in the first inning. Anthony Lazar scored on a sacrifice fly by Greg Kocinski. Later in the inning, Tyler Kapuscinski scored on a groundout by Matt Pagano.
The Red Foxes added three more in the third, as Lazar found home again—this time on a single by Frankie Gregoire. Kapuscinski then scored again on a single by Kocinski. Pagano then drove in Gregoire on a groundout.
MSU got on the board in the third inning when Jake Mangum scored on a sacrifice fly by Luke Alexander.
Marist responded with three runs in the fourth, with Lazar and Pat Lightner scoring on a double by Gregoire. Kapuscinski then found home by way of a groundout by Kocinski.
The Bulldogs started clawing back in the fifth with a pair of runs. Brant Blaylock scored on a Marist error, followed by Mangum scoring on a wild pitch.
The Red Foxes scored their final run in the sixth on a single by Andrew Rouse that drove in Kapuscinski.
MSU then made things interesting with four runs in the sixth. Alexander laced a double down the left field line that drove in Blaylock and Josh Lovelady. Alexander and Mangum then scored on a single by Ryan Gridley.
The Bulldogs scored their final run in the seventh when Tanner Poole scored on a groundout by Mangum.
Sean Keenan (1-0) earned the win in relief for Marist. He went 3.0 innings and allowed three runs (all earned) on three hits while walking two and striking out three. Tony Romanelli closed out the game and earned his second save of the year, going 4.0 innings and allowing five runs (four earned) on three hits. He struck out four batters and walked two.
MSU starter Ryan Cyr (0-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs. The sophomore pitched 2.0 innings and allowed five runs (all earned) on five hits. He also walked a pair and struck out one batter.
Riley Self continued to shine in relief, pitching 3.1 shutout innings to finish out the game for MSU. He struck out four batters and allowed just two hits on the day.
MSU will now head west for their first road game of 2017 with a three-game series at Oregon, which will begin on Friday, March 3 and conclude Sunday, March 5 in Eugene.
