Late Bulldog Rally Falls Short At No. 20 LSU In 23-20 Setback
September 17, 2016 | Football
LSU built a 23-3 lead at halftime and led 23-6 through three periods, but MSU's offense sparked when junior quarterback Damian Williams entered the game in the fourth after sophomore starter Nick Fitzgerald lost his helmet on a play. Williams then led both of State's two touchdown drives.Â
"We played with some good effort in the second half," head coach Dan Mullen said. "Stop worrying about everything except going as hard as you can on every single play. Honestly, that was our second half adjustment."
Fitzgerald completed 12-of-24 passes for 120 yards, while Williams completed 5-of-8 attempts for 94 yards a touchdown, in addition to one rushing touchdown. Senior running back Ashton Shumpert led the team with 34 yards on six games and senior Fred Ross led MSU with 89 yards receiving and one touchdown on six receptions. Â
Defensively, freshman linebacker Leo Lewis led MSU with 10 tackles.Â
Mississippi State plays at UMass next Saturday at 2:30 p.m. CT in the first-ever meeting between the teams. The game will be contested at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Mass.
