Gameday: MSU, No. 20 LSU Square Off In SEC West Matchup
September 16, 2016 | Football
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State seeks to continue its recent road success as the Bulldogs open Southeastern Conference Western Division play at No. 20/22 LSU at 6 p.m. CT Saturday from Tiger Stadium. For complete gameday information, visit HailState.com/gameday.
It will be the first of six road contests for State (1-1, 1-0 SEC) this season. The Bulldogs went 5-1 away from Davis Wade Stadium last year – their best road record since 1994 – and were 3-1 in SEC road tilts.
MSU is coming off a dominating 27-14 victory over South Carolina, outscoring the Gamecocks 24-0 in the first half. LSU (1-1, 0-0) beat Jacksonville State, 34-13, last Saturday in Baton Rouge.
Sophomore quarterback Nick Fitzgerald leads State in passing and rushing, throwing for 178 yards and accumulating 206 yards on the ground. Fitzgerald is the SEC leader in average yards per carry (10.8).
J.T. Gray and Richie Brown are tops on the squad in tackles with 16. Senior defensive end A.J. Jefferson, the current SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week, leads the SEC in tackles for loss (6) and is tied for the league lead in sacks (3).
MSU aims to become just the third team since the start of the millennium to defeat LSU in Tiger Stadium in consecutive games. Florida did it in 2001 and 2003, while Alabama achieved the feat in 2012 and 2014.
