Bulldogs Hit The Farm, Go Full Pads in Practice
August 06, 2016 | Football
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State football visited the familiar August site of The Farm on Saturday, going through its first full pads practice of preseason camp for just over two hours.
The Farm, an off-campus site of practice fields, has been where the Bulldogs have forged their team identity for the past eight years under head coach Dan Mullen. Following position meetings, players hop in vans driven by their assistant coaches to the location, which has no shade in the brutal August heat.
"It feels good to be back on The Farm," Mullen said. "It's a different mindset for the guys, especially for the young players. I think by having that place to practice, it separates training camp. It gives them a different feel for where we're at and what part of the season it is. It just changes things up. I believe 10 days is the most we have ever been out there, with six days being the least. When you're out there, you just block it out. You just know it's different. I believe it helps the guys get through training camp."
The squad will spend the next eight practices at the Farm, including two-a-day workouts on Monday and next Saturday. The first scrimmage of preseason camp will be held Thursday night. All practices and scrimmages are closed to the public.
After four straight days of helmets, shorts and then "Dawg Gear", MSU put the full pads on and were in thud scrimmage situations for the second half of Saturday's practice with heat indices soaring to 105.
Mullen continues to give all four quarterbacks equal reps during the installation phase of camp.
"It's hot out so they are okay rotating right there," he said. "We go by ones, twos, and threes. There are plenty of reps to be had at practice. When you're going uptempo the great thing is, you can get some extra reps in and the guys get to put in the extra work.
"Right now, we're in installation and it all comes down to who performs well. For a game, anything is possible with four quarterbacks, but I would love to have it narrowed down by game week."
Portions of Saturday's practice were filmed by the SEC Network Inside crew. The "Hard Knocks" type show will air segments later this August on SEC Now.
