Carr Named To 2016 SEC Volleyball Community Service Team
November 30, 2016 | Volleyball
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For Khris Carr, Starkville is more than just her home during her college years. It's where she was born and raised.
Her love for Starkville and the community she has grown up in has led her to be named to the 2016 SEC Community Service Team.
Carr leads the Bulldogs in community service hours over the past year, with activities ranging from on campus and in the city to across the country.
The Starkville native has participated in Camp Rising Sun, which is a camp for children living in Mississippi, Alabama and southwestern Tennessee who have been or are currently being treated for cancer. Carr also took part in Project Linus, which collects blankets and distributes them to children in hospitals, shelters, social service agencies, or anywhere that a child might be in need.
Carr has also served greatly to local Starkville schools in her time as a Bulldog. The outside hitter served breakfast to local Starkville elementary school children during the annual Breakfast of Champions event. Carr also joined fellow MSU student-athletes in Walk To School Day, walking with local Starkville school children to school.
Several times throughout the year, Carr has participated in Gameday Carpool, meeting and greeting children as they arrive to school. She has also participated in Chick-Fil-A Family Night, spending time with local Starkville families.
Carr has also had a drive to help her fellow student-athletes, as she took part in the Student-Athlete Panel at Mississippi State. Carr volunteered to speak to a group of freshmen student-athletes this past summer to prepare them for their new lives in college, addressing issues like academics-athletics balance, service opportunities, time management, and general student-athlete preparedness concerns.
The reach of Carr's service to community goes far beyond the city limits of Starkville as well. She teamed up with other MSU students and the Starkville Police Department to collect water for residents of Flint, Mich.
Carr is a second-generation Bulldog, as her mother lettered in basketball from 1987-90 and her father lettered in football from 1990-92. Her mother, Ann Carr, is a senior associate athletic director and the senior women's administrator at Mississippi State, while also overseeing student-athlete services. Carr is majoring in communication with an emphasis in broadcasting.
