November 15, 2016 | Cross Country
STARKVILLE, Miss. – A historic week for No. 19 Mississippi State cross country continued Tuesday, as Houston Franks became the first coach in program history to be recognized by the USTFCCCA as Coach of the Year for the South Region.
The honor comes four days removed from the program's first regional championship, where the team grabbed a one point victory against rival and 14th–ranked Ole Miss.
"It is a great honor, and it takes so many people to win this," Franks said. "I really wish they would make it a staff award, because there are so many people that go into this. This is not a one person award, to say the least."
A program-record five Bulldogs were named to the All-Region team after placing inside the Top 25 in Tallahassee. MSU was paced by Senior All-American Rhianwedd Price, grabbing a fifth-place finish and securing the Bulldog victory.
"He massively deserves it," Price said. "Everyone always responds so well to everything he says, and he makes everyone want to do the best that they can."
With the regional championship, MSU qualified for the NCAA Cross Country Championships for the second-straight season. Franks' squad will travel to Terre Haute, Ind Saturday, looking to win the first national championship in program history.
