STARKVILLE, Miss. - In their first match of the 2013 dual match season, Mississippi State Lady Bulldog tennis claimed an impressive 7-0 victory against in-state rival Southern Miss Tuesday on campus.

The Lady Bulldog squad kicked off the match by taking the doubles point with impressive wins from the No. 2 and 3 positions. Freshman newcomers Lien Van Geel and Sarai Flores were the first to secure a victory, taking down Macie Case and Emily Nettles of Southern Miss in a dominant 8-0 decision on court 3. Petra Ferancova and Roseline Dion followed suit, posting an 8-1 win against Alexus Coats and Elanor Grossman at No. 2 to put MSU up 1-0 overall. Play was then suspended on court 1, with State's Naomi Tran and Georgiana Patrasc up 6-4 against Kate Lanier and Lauren May of the Golden Eagles.

Singles competition began with a quick 6-0, 6-0 sweep for Dion against USM's Case at the No. 5 position to put the Lady Bulldogs up 2-0 overall. The rookie Flores extended the MSU lead to 3-0 with a solid 6-2, 6-0 win over Emily Nettles on court 6.

Making her dual match debut at the No. 1 position, the State freshman Patrasc clinched the Maroon and White team win with a 6-0, 6-2 triumph against Golden Eagle senior Kate Lanier.

Van Geel continued the Bulldog winning streak, defeating USM's Grossman in a 6-2, 6-4 decision on court 3.

Ferancova posted the team's sixth point, winning 10-straight games to come back from a 5-3, first-set deficit and claim a 7-5, 6-0 triumph against Lauren May on court 4.

MSU's Tran then secured the 7-0 sweep for the Lady Bulldogs with a hard-fought 6-3, 6-4 win at the No. 2 position against Coats of USM.

"Today was a good win. The girls played well. This was definitely a good win to get under our belts, and get rid of the first-game jitters. We need to be a little smoother, a little smarter, and hopefully we can build on this going into Sunday," said head coach Daryl Greenan.

The Lady Bulldogs will be at home once again as they take on the Lady Cougars of Houston on Sunday, Feb. 3, at 1 p.m. CT. Updates for Lady Bulldog tennis can be found at or through Twitter (@mstateWT).
