TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - Newcomer Georgiana Patrasc and seasoned veteran Alexandra Perper led the Mississippi State Lady Bulldogs with two consecutive victories each in the team's first day of competition at the ITA Southern Regional Championships Friday. Both players advance to Saturday's round of 16 with their victories.
In the first round of singles play, the sixth-seeded Perper defeated Brooke Durden of Troy in a 6-4, 6-1 decision, followed by a 6-2, 6-3 first round win for Patrasc against Kesica Iavapalan of Jackson State. Perper continued her victorious streak into the second round, taking down Samford's Mary Angela Martin 6-2, 6-2. Patrasc, a 9-16 seed in the tourney, carried on the winning pattern posting a 3-6, 6-2, 6-3 come-from-behind victory against Ariel Morton of LSU.
Naomi Tran and Petra Ferancova for the Lady Bulldogs posted first-round victories as well, defeating Kristin Lewis of Samford and Iris Verboven Ole Miss, respectively. Unfortunately the two sophomores could not carry the momentum into the second round as Tran fell 6-0, 6-1 to Auburn's Pleun Burgmans and Ferancova lost to Ella Taylor of LSU in a 6-0, 6-1 decision.
True freshmen Lien Van Geel and Sarai Flores both fell in the first round Friday, but Van Geel rebounded with a consolation victory. Van Geel dropped her first-round match 6-0, 6-3 to Jenny Hois of Tulane. In consolation play, the native of Belgium came back to post a 6-3, 7-5 triumph over Samford's Jessica Northcutt. Flores fell to Michala Kucharova of Auburn 6-0, 6-0 in the first round, and was defeated 6-4, 7-5 in consolation by Rachel Daniel of UAB in the second round of play.
In the first round of doubles play, the Lady Bulldogs finished 1-1. Perper and Tran, a 5-8 seed, paired up against Candela Munoz and Rosaura Ramirez-Vega of Troy, taking the match 8-0 in a runaway to advance to the round of 16. Flores and Patrasc went head-to-head against Caroline Hudson and Ella Taylor of LSU. The newcomer duo dropped the match 8-2.
Head Coach Daryl Greenan was satisfied with the performance of his team.
"Alexandra and Georgiana led the way for us in singles," Greenan said. "Overall I think it was a solid first day of regional play for our girls. The conditions were very windy which provided a greater challenge physically and mentally. We were able to pick up several solid wins and will have some good opportunities tomorrow. I hope we step up and take advantage of them/"
The Lady Bulldogs will continue play in the ITA Southern Regional Championships tomorrow beginning at 9 a.m. CT with two rounds of doubles play and one round of singles. Updates on Lady Bulldog play will be available through hailstate.com and @mstateWT.
