AUBURN, Ala. - As the Mississippi Lady Bulldog Tennis squad completed play in its debut fall tournament Saturday, the team continued to post successful scores by finishing the day 4-1 in singles, and 3-3 in doubles.
Leading the way for State was freshman Georgiana Patrasc who clinched the title of Flight 2 singles with a 7-6(4), 6-4 victory against Paulina Schippers of host Auburn. Patrasc was 3-0 on the weekend in her collegiate debut.
In other singles play Saturday, junior Alexandra Perper, ranked 122nd nationally, finished runner-up in Flight 1 after dropping her match against Klara Vyskocilova of Tulane 6-3, 6-1 in the title match of the top draw.
Sophomore Naomi Tran and newcomer Sarai Flores earned the consolation crown in their respective draws. Tran defeated Alexa Flynn of UT Chattanooga in a 6-0, 6-2 decision to take the consolation final of Flight 3. Flores wrapped up Flight 6 consolation with a victory against Tulane's Hila Elster in a 7-6(3), 6-4 decision.
Another MSU rookie, Lien Van Geel claimed third place in Flight 4 singles with a 4-6, 6-4, 1-0(9) win over Caroline Magnusson of Tulane.
The Lady Bulldogs kicked off the day with doubles play, beginning with consecutive wins in the consolation round of Flight 1 for Perper and Patrasc. The duo took down the Northwestern State duo of Tatiana Larina and Andrea Nedorostova 8-4, followed by another 8-4 win for MSU against Tulane's Jenny Hois and Klara Vylskocilova, giving the MSU pair the consolation crown in the top draw.
Tran and Van Geel fell to Polina Konop and Nataly Krutova of Northwestern State 9-8(1) in the semifinal round of play in Flight 2. The Bulldog pair also dropped their consolation match 8-3 to Caroline Magnusson and Caroline Thornton of Tulane.
Lady Bulldogs Roseline Dion and Flores fell in an 8-6 decision to Tulane's Emma Levy and Hila Elster in the semis of Flight 3 doubles, but the duo rallied back to take the third place match, defeating Daniela Simonova and Amy Williams of Northwestern State 8-3.
"It was a strong overall performance by the girls this weekend. Gerogiana had a great showing, winning the first event of her career. All five of our players finished with winning records. Overall, it was a great experience for our young team, and the coaches saw a lot of good things as well as areas to work on," said Assistant Coach Courtney Steinbock.
