MSU Golf Newcomer Advances At U.S. Women's Amateur

NESHANIC STATION, N.J. - One of the most highly touted members of the 2012 Mississippi State women's golf signing class lived up to the hype on Wednesday afternoon, as incoming freshman Cheih Peng advanced to the round of 32 of the U.S. Women's Amateur Public Links Championship.

The Shenzhen, China, native defeated fellow SEC golfer Lauren Stratton of Vanderbilt in match play to move on to the round of 32. Stratton ranked as the ninth best women's golfer a season ago among collegiate players. Peng defeated Stratton, 3 and 2, at the Neshanic Valley Golf Course to advance.

Peng's journey at the WAPL began with the incoming Bulldog making the cut with a total score of 146 and finishing 2-over par to tie for the 37th spot in the field.

Fellow Maroon and White signee Gabi Oubre' made the cut with Peng to advance to the field of 64 as well, with her total score of 148 and a 4-over par from the course to finish the second round tied with seven others for the 54th spot. Oubre's journey ended on Wednesday, however, as she was defeated in match play by Brittany Altomare, 3 and 2.

The WAPL will continue on Thursday with match play for the round of 32 starting at 6:30 a.m. Peng will face off against Honolulu native Allisen Corpuz at 8:10 A.M.
