STARKVILLE, Miss. - For the fourth year in a row, Mississippi State has put multiple Bulldogs in the NFL through the draft and free agency.

Cornerbacks Darius Slay (Detroit Lions) and Johnthan Banks (Tampa Bay Buccaneers) were each selected in the second round of this year’s NFL Draft, both of whom were signees in Dan Mullen’s first class in 2009. Slay arrived on campus after two years of junior college, making a tremendous impact his senior year, and Banks started all four years at MSU, winning the Jim Thorpe Award after his senior season, given annually to the nation’s top cornerback.

Defensive tackle Josh Boyd, also a part of that heralded 2009 signing class, was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the fifth round of the draft, joining former Bulldog and 2011 first round pick Derek Sherrod in Wisconsin. Boyd started all 13 games for MSU as a senior after a four-year career in Starkville where he was a stalwart on the defensive line. Boyd played in both the Shrine Game and the Senior Bowl leading up to the draft, showcasing the talents honed as a Bulldog.

Following the completion of the draft, several more Bulldogs were snatched up immediately.

Wide receiver Chad Bumphis (Miami Dolphins), linebacker Cam Lawrence (Dallas Cowboys) and defensive tackle Dewayne Cherrington (New England Patriots) all signed priority free agent deals and wide receiver Arceto Clark earned a camp spot with the Seattle Seahawks.

Both history and depth charts are on their side as each joined favorable situations. In New England, Cherrington joins fellow MSU alum and defensive tackle Kyle Love who just signed a new contract and was an undrafted free agent himself in 2010 when he signed with the Patriots.
