STARKVILLE, Miss. - Freshman second baseman Sam Frost doubled in a pair of runs during a five-run Bulldog burst Wednesday night as Mississippi State (11-6) topped Mississippi Valley State (4-14) 16-2 in college baseball at Dudy Noble Field.

Frost set season-bests for hits and RBI with a 4-for-5, 5-RBI plate performance.

Five MSU batters drew walks and another was struck by a pitch as the Bulldogs sent 10 batters to the plate in the opening frame. Ryan Collins singled in a pair of runs during a three-run State spree in the fifth and Frost added a second two-run double when the Bulldogs tacked on five more runs in the sixth.

"Sam did a great job tonight," said State coach John Cohen. "He has been putting too much effort in his swing and he has worked to come off of that some. He has the potential to do some great things because he is so electric."

Sophomore lefty Nick Routt (1-1) retired the six batters he faced, four on strikeouts, to lead a split pitching crew and earn the win for State.

MVSU right-hander Steven Barnes (0-3) took the loss, allowing six runs (four earned) on six walks and two hits. The two teams used a combined 17 pitchers in the game.

Outfielder Allen Cheek singled and scored the Delta Devils'first run in the fourth inning on an infield groundout by shortstop Jerry Hildreth and MVSU plated a second run in the final inning on Jack Edmondson's infield groundout.

The Bulldogs totaled 13 hits for the night and batted through the order in the first, fifth and sixth innings. Frost finished with a game-high four hits. Jet Butler tallied three hits while Collins and Connor Powers registered two-hit games.

The Bulldogs travel to Gainesville, Fla., this weekend to open league competition with a tjhree-game series against sixth-ranked Florida.

Friday's series-opener is set for 6 p.m. CDT at UF's McKethan Stadium/Perry Field.
