The Shira Fieldhouse Complex, which underwent a million-dollar renovation in 1992 and another facelift in 2005, serves as one of Mississippi State's two primary facilities for conditioning, treating and equipping Bulldog athletes.

Named in honor of the late Charles N. Shira, former MSU head football coach and athletic director, the two-story complex opened in the mid-1970s. When opened at that time, it housed the football locker room and a 50-yard-long indoor practice field, as well as the main athletic equipment, training and weight rooms.

Fifteen good years of service later the facility needed both expansion and renovation to accommodate the ever-growing demands of State athletes and staff. The wishes of State's administration became reality thanks to record increases in MSU's football revenues in 1990 and '91 - increases so significant that the project timetable was advanced to 1992. Preliminary groundwork and dismantling of much of the original building began in May 1992. Construction work, by Oswalt and Sons of Mathiston, Miss., was completed in November 1992, adding 17,404 square feet of new total floor space at a cost of $1,040,500.  The centerpieces of that expansion project were the gleaming new football locker room, as spacious and well-equipped a facility as any Southeastern Conference institution, and the adjacent new weight room, vastly improved in equipment, access and atmosphere.

In 2005, Shira's duties changed once again, this time due to the development of the newly-constructed Holliman Athletic Center, which was an extension to Shira's east side. Shira still serves as a meeting area, as the old training room was converted into meeting rooms for MSU football, and the weight room continues to be utilized by roughly half of MSU's athletic teams.

With MSU football moving into the Holliman Center, the Shira football locker room built in '92 now serves MSU's track and field squads. While Shira's indoor practice field area remains intact today, the turf itself received an overhaul in 2002 when FieldTurf, the popular new synthetic playing surface, was installed as the area's practice surface.
