Keeping this in mind, the sports medicine staff at MIssissippi State University strives to provide the best health care to all our student athletes with this idea in mind. We believe in creating a partnership between the athlete, their parents, the coaches, and our medical staff. The following information, as well as the section above that outlines our staff, will give you information about our comprehensive medical staff and how we have developed a program that provides care in all areas for our student athletes. Athletic Training Staff The medical team begins with the certified athletic trainers (ATC's) who interact with the student athletes on a daily basis. The American Medical Association has recognized athletic training as an allied health care profession because of the ATC's knowledge and experience in injury assessment, rehabilitation, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders. Each full time staff athletic trainer at Mississippi State is certified by the National Athletic Trainers' Association Board of Certification and is licensed in the state of Mississippi. Athletic Training Room The Mississippi State Sports Medicine Department consists of six athletic training rooms at various athletic facilities to better serve our student athletes. The athletic training rooms are staffed by our seven full time staff members along with five graduate assistants and 20 student athletic trainers. The new Columbus Orthopaedic Sports Medicine Center is equipped with the latest in modalities (in-ground whirlpools, ultrasound, electrical stimulation), rehabilitation equipment (including a Biodex and Hydroworx® therapy pool with an underwater treadmill), an x-ray machine, and a variety of additional equipment necessary to meet the needs of the elite collegiate athlete. The Team Family Practice Physicians and Orthopedists are available at practice and in the athletic training room almost daily for consultation with the athletic trainers and student athletes. John C. Longest Student Health Center Mississippi State University maintains a full service student health center on campus where our two Team Family Practice Physicians practice. They are supported by a lab, pharmacy, x-ray, physical therapy department, nutritionists, three additional physicians, four nurse practitioners, and a nursing staff.
MSU Athletic Physical Examination Medical care starts with a comprehensive physical examination at the beginning of the athlete's freshman year and continues throughout their career. All information gathered is considered confidential, and a physical exam is repeated each year. The exam includes: • Complete personal medical history with a registered nurse • Vital statistics, including: Height, weight, arm span, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse • Body fat percentage (caliper or hydrostatic) • Vaccines, which may include: Tetanus (all first years) and influenza • Lab screening, including: CBC, urinalysis, sickle cell trait, and TB skin test • Dental screening with the team dentist • Vision screening with the team optometrist • General medical examination with a team family practice physician • Orthopaedic examination with a team orthopedist (with immediate x-rays available by request of the team physician) • Spinal alignment evaluation with the team chiropractor • Other tests as determined by physician at exam MSU Athletic Training Room Facilities and Action Photos
