STARKVILLE, Miss. -- A second member of the 2002 Mississippi State University pitching staff, junior right-hander Jonathan Papelbon, has been selected in the Major League Baseball Draft.

Papelbon, from Jacksonville, Fla., was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 40th round (1208th selection over) Wednesday afternoon. Papelbon led Mississippi State with five saves and compiled a 3-4 record with a 2.94 earned run average in the just-completed season. He appeared in 22 games, all in relief, totaling 45 strikeouts in 40 innings.

In Tuesday's opening day selections, another current Bulldog pitcher, junior righty Chris Young (5-2, 3.67), was chosen in the 18th round by the Colorado Rockies.
