STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State sophomore offensive lineman D.J. Looney has been selected to represent the Southeastern Conference as a member of the NCAA Division I Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). Looney’s term begins immediately and ends in September of 2011, at which time he would be eligible for re-appointment.
The Student-Athlete Advisory Committee is part of the governing structure of the NCAA, and meets regularly in person and through conference calls. The Division I SAAC is comprised of representatives from each conference, and their input is sought in several NCAA initiatives from rule changes to student-athlete welfare.
“This is a great honor to most importantly represent Mississippi State, and also the best conference in the country,” Looney said. “I’m excited about the opportunity and look forward to going to Denver and getting started.”
The committee will have its first meeting with the new leadership next month in Denver, and will also meet in Indianapolis in November and at the NCAA Convention next spring in Atlanta.
A native of Birmingham, Ala., Looney played in four games during his redshirt freshman season a year ago, earning one start.
