STARKVILLE, Miss. - After a very magical and school-best finish in 2013-14, the Bulldogs are sitting at a pre-season ranking of No. 14 in GolfWeek.com Top 25, which was announced Thursday.
The web site released just 11-15, with the rest of the rankings coming in the next few days. On Friday, the 5-10 rankings will be announced.
The Bulldogs finished sixth last season in the NCAA Championship after placing third in regional action. They also collected two first-place finishes at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational and in Hawaii at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational.
Head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm returns for her fifth season with MSU. Returning are seven veterans, while she also welcomes one newcomer to her squad.
“While it’s a reward for lots of work to be preseason ranked 14th, our focus will remain on our commitment to daily preparations, the technical practice and the mental training that brought us here,” Brown-Lemm said. “I look for great things as (we) begin our most competitive schedule to date. We are rising to the occasion through our commitment to our program, our university and each other.”
Two-time, first-team All-American, Ally McDonald, returns to finish out her senior season with the Bulldogs. MSU also added sophomore transfer, Haley Austin, to the squad. Austin was an Atlantic Sun Conference All-Freshman Team while at Mercer.
Returning player Rica Tse, who finished second on the Bulldog leaderboard at the Old Waverly Bulldog Invitational, will be one of the ladies assuming that role, along with Jessica Peng, who had four Top 10 finishes after averaging 73.71 a round en route to earning freshman All-SEC honors
Alongside Tse, Ji Eun Baik also returns for the Bulldogs. Baik advanced to the round of 64 out of 154 last season at the USGA Girls Junior Amateur.
Under the experienced veteran leadership, Mississippi State seeks to meet high expectations for this season.
Vanderbilt is currently the only released SEC team ranked higher than MSU at No. 11. The Bulldog’s are ranked above SEC Foes Texas A&M, Auburn, Florida and LSU in the Top 30.
