STARKVILLE, Miss. – With opening kick of the season a week away, the Mississippi State soccer team gets its final preseason tune-up Saturday night as it heads to Tuscaloosa for a 7 p.m. contest against Alabama.
The Bulldogs head into the contest looking to build on the momentum of a 1-0 win at Memphis Wednesday morning.
The two have built chemistry going back to the spring, when Jainudeen scored three goals and Ferrara added four.
Against a talented Tigers squad Wednesday, the Bulldogs used tough, aggressive defense and a shutout performance in goal from rookie Rhylee DeCrane to clinch the victory.
Alabama, one of two SEC teams Aaron Gordon’s squad doesn’t face this season, returns four of its five points leaders from a year ago. Senior Pia Rijsdijk leads the club after scoring seven goals and assisting four more in 2013.
The teams played a friendly in the spring, with the Crimson Tide escaping Starkville with a 1-0 victory.
Gordon’s club officially opens the 2014 slate Aug. 22, hosting Iowa State at 7 p.m. on the SEC Network +.
