STARKVILLE, Miss. – With the 2014 fall campaign closing in, the Mississippi State men’s tennis program has signed Juan Cruz Estevarena, head coach Matt Roberts announced Friday.
The Argentina native joins the Bulldogs after a stellar junior career that saw him rise to as high as fourth in Argentina and fifth in South America in the junior rankings.
“For a freshman, Juan Cruz brings a lot of experience and a big game to the team,” Roberts said. “He has mainly played on the ITF futures tour and has proven he can beat top level players.”
Estevarena brings an impressive track record on the ITF futures circuit to Starkville, reaching the semifinals in numerous doubles tournaments. Highlighted amongst those semifinal runs was the 2013 Turkey F16 Futures, where Estevarena teamed with former Bulldog standout George Coupland to reach the semifinals.
The newest addition to the Maroon and White, who has reached career-high ATP rankings of No. 1,336 in singles and No. 1,210 in doubles, has demonstrated his ability to beat top-level talent, with wins against Mauricio Perez Mota (ATP No. 607), Ryusei Makiguchi (No. 681) and Benjamin Ugarte (No. 786). For his career, Estevarena has earned six singles wins and 15 doubles wins in ATP and ITF Pro Circuit main draw matches.
“We are excited to help Juan Cruz develop as he continues to pursue his goal of being a successful professional tennis player,” Roberts said. For more information on Mississippi State men’s tennis and updates, fans can follow the Bulldogs on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at HailStateMT.
