Johnson, Day On National Watch Lists
STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the third-straight year, Mississippi State seniors Malcolm Johnson and Dillon Day were placed on official preseason watch lists. Johnson earned a spot on the preseason list for the John Mackey Award, presented annually to college football’s most outstanding tight end. Day was placed on the list for the Rimington Trophy, presented annually to college football’s most outstanding center.
Johnson, a 2013 second team All-Southeastern Conference selection by the league’s coaches, enters his final campaign with 32 career games played and 11 starts. He has totaled 51 receptions for 768 yards and seven touchdowns during his three years with the Bulldogs.
Last season, the Tuscaloosa, Ala., product was selected as the Oct. 30 John Mackey Tight End of the Week after hauling in four passes for 70 yards and a 60-yard touchdown against Kentucky. He turned in the best game of his career against No. 1 Alabama, registering personal bests in receptions (six) and yards (84) with two passes going for 20 or more yards.
Since 2000, the top collegiate tight end has been presented with the award named after NFL Hall of Fame member John Mackey. The winner will be announced on Dec. 11 at The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show, which will be televised on ESPNU.
Day, a native of West Monroe, La., enters his senior campaign having started 33 career games. In 2013, Day paved the way for a Bulldog offense that shattered school marks in total yards (5,674), yards per game (434.4) and first downs (305).
The winner of the Rimington Trophy will be selected by determining the consensus All-American center pick from three existing All-America teams. While more than a dozen All-America football teams are selected annually, the Rimington Trophy committee will use these prestigious teams to determine a winner: Walter Camp Foundation (WCF), Sporting News (SN) and Football Writers Association of America (FWAA).
