Ally McDonald To Tee Off In U.S. Women's Open
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Fresh off an impressive showing for the United States in the Curtis Cup Match victory, Ally McDonald of the Mississippi State women’s golf team is set to compete in the prestigious U.S. Women’s Open in Pinehurst, N.C. on Thursday, June 19th.
The four-day, four-round major event will be played at the par-70, 6,649-yard Pinehurst No. 2 course.
“It is such a blessing to be playing here,” McDonald said. “Since winning the North/South [Amateur title] last year, I have been working very hard for MSU, and I really wanted to get back here to play in this tournament. If I play as well that I feel like I can, then I will give myself a chance to be here all weekend.”
McDonald punched her ticket to the tournament by firing consecutive 72’s to end the two-round qualifying event at Carolina Trace Country Club with a 144 on May 29th. With her score placing her in the playoff for the final spot, McDonald birdied the opening hole of the playoff to secure her spot.
“What an honor and privilege for Ally to be competing in the U.S. Women’s Open at Pinehurst,” fourth-year Bulldogs head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “She has great memories from winning the North/South on this golf course, and it will further prepare her for her senior season and beyond.”
The Fulton, Miss., native returns to the famed Pinehurst No. 2 for the first time since winning the 111th North & South Women’s Amateur title back in June of last year.
McDonald will tee off her opening round at 12:03 p.m. CST on hole 1, paired with Rebecca Lee-Bentham of Canada and Ayaka Watanabe of Japan.
