MSU Opens Day One Of Jace Lacoste Invitational With Two Wins

STARKVILLE, Miss. - Under the lights at W.O. Spencer Stadium, Mississippi State track and field opened the 2014 Jace Lacoste Invitational with individual wins from both the men and women on Friday.

“Tonight was a great way to start the weekend,” MSU coach Steve Dudley said. “I’m looking forward to seeing more top performances tomorrow, and I know our athletes are excited to compete in front of a home crowd.”

Jodie McGuff clocked a 17:45.37 to win the women’s 5000-meter run, while John Valentine notched a win for the men in the event at 14:50.05.

Following Valentine were Philip Johnson (15:04.73), Carson Britton (15:16.23), Mike Clark (15:18.47) and Matt Weickert (15:46.67), who finished fourth, sixth, seventh and ninth, respectively.

In the field, Haley Reynolds saw a fourth-place finish in the women’s hammer throw, tossing 121-09.00, while women’s pole vaulter Sydney Rodkey cleared 12-05.50 to finish sixth.

Action will resume on Saturday at noon with field events, while races begin at 2:30 p.m. with the women's 4x100-meter relay. The Invitational is scheduled to finish at 5:55 p.m. with the men's 4x400-meter relay.
