Lindgren Named To NCBWA Stopper of the Year Midseason Watch List
STARKVILLE, Miss. – Thanks to a nation-best 17.5 strikeouts per nine innings, Mississippi State baseball junior left-hander Jacob Lindgren was named to the midseason watch list for the 2014 National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, the organization announced this past week. In its 10th year, the award is presented annually to the top relief pitcher in NCAA Division I baseball.
Lindgren, one of 50 players nationally to make the list, leads the Bulldogs with team lows in ERA (1.36) and opponent batting average (.140). In SEC play, the lefty’s ERA drops to 0.89 with opponents hitting .129 against him. Overall, Lindgren is 3-0 with three saves this season.
The southpaw’s team-high 64 K’s rank sixth in the Southeastern Conference, making him the only pitcher without a start to appear in the top 10 in strikeouts. When the ball is put in play, Lindgren has tallied a MSU-best 28:6 groundout-to-flyout ratio. The junior also clamps down with two outs, having held batters to 2-for-38 (.053) at the dish with two gone.
Prior to this season, Lindgren was named a top-20 SEC prospect for the 2014 Major League Baseball Draft by both Baseball America (10th) and Perfect Game (17th). Perfect Game also listed him as one of the top-100 juniors. Having played in 45 career games, Lindgren ranks in the top five nationally among active players with 11.77 career strikeouts per nine innings.
Lindgren and the No. 23 Bulldogs (28-17, 11-10 SEC) return to action this Wednesday for their final non-conference tilt of the regular season against Jacksonville State. First pitch at Dudy Noble Field is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For more information on the program, follow us on Twitter, Facebook and Instagram at HailStateBB.
