ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – Propelled by an opening-round 70 from senior Chad Ramey, the Mississippi State men’s golf team pulled even with Kentucky for seventh place after one round of play at the SEC Championship.

The Bulldogs turned in a 7-over-par 286 at Sea Island on Friday, matching their score from a year ago in the first round.

“Our score doesn’t really show it, but we played pretty well today,” coach Clay Homan said of the opening round. “Unfortunately, we dropped about five or six shots on our last three holes due to some poor wedge play, but I like the way we handled ourselves out there.”

No. 1 Alabama jumped out to an early lead at St. Simons Island, firing an 8-under-par 272 on Friday. The Crimson Tide won last year’s SEC Championship with an 8-over-par 848.

On the individual side at Sea Island, two golfers are tied for the lead after the opening round. South Carolina’s Matthew NeSmith and Alabama’s Bobby Wyatt are tied atop the leaderboard at 5-under-par.

Ramey’s even card on Friday placed the senior in a tie for 16th overall at Sea Island. The Fulton, Miss., native finished fifth at last year’s SEC Championship, shooting a 1-over-par 211.

Joining Ramey in the top 25 was senior Barrett Edens. The Okolona, Miss., native turned in a 1-over-par 71 for the opening round to finish his day tied for 21st.

Fellow senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan posted a 2-over-par 72 in the first round, finishing tied with seven others at 31st overall. Sakulpolphaisan knocked in three birdies in the opening round to aid his 2-over score.

Rounding out the Maroon and White scorecard from Sea Island were sophomore Ben Wood and senior Axel Boasson. Wood fired off a 4-over-par 74, while Boasson posted a 12-over-par 82 from the course.

Homan’s squad will tee off at 7:30 a.m. EST on Saturday, alongside Missouri and Kentucky.
