PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – In front of 21,422 fans, Mississippi State track and field kicked off the 120th Penn Relays on Friday with three top-10 finishes at Franklin Field.
“It is always good to get that first day out of the way," MSU coach Steve Dudley said. "I’m proud of how we performed today. We have crossed that first hurdle, and now we can make way for the excitement and adrenaline of competing.”
Freshman Lisa Ziegler finished first for collegiate runners (sixth overall) in the Olympic development women's 5000-meter run with a time of 16:43.83. Her speed ranks second all-time at MSU.
Senior Rochelle Farquharson’s 20-08.50 in the long jump also highlighted the day for the Bulldogs as she garnered a second-place finish in the event.
In the men’s Olympic development 5000-meter run, sophomore Andrew Monaghan posted a 14:39.12 to finish seventh for collegiate runners.
Katie Huston, Keisha Wallace, Ocian Archer and Rhianwedd Price clocked an 11:25.06 in the women’s college distance medley championship of America to finish 11th. The quartet’s time ranks third all-time on the MSU outdoor performance list.
Sophomore Emma Neigel (9:35.70) donned the school’s second-best outdoor time in history en route to a 12th-place finish in the college women’s 3000-meter championship.
Action continues tomorrow at 8 a.m. CT as Scottie Hearn and Javon Davis race in the men’s college 400-meter hurdles championship. Friday’s competition is expected to conclude at 6 p.m. CT.
