Madison, Miss. – A tournament-best 4-over-par 292 propelled Mississippi State from 11th to first on Tuesday, giving the Bulldogs back-to-back BancorpSouth Intercollegiate championships.

The Bulldogs turned in a 12-over-par 588 at the Reunion Golf Course, edging out No. 15 Vanderbilt and No. 10 Houston on their way to the winner’s circle.

“I am so proud of this team for the way they battled today,” Coach Clay Homan said. “On a day where it was so easy to get frustrated and lose focus, we showed a tremendous amount of determination.”

Much like last week’s Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, the Bulldogs pulled ahead in the final stages, shooting 1-under-par for the back nine to jump over 12 teams.

“I believe our maturity and senior leadership made a huge difference today,” Homan said of the comeback. “Last Tuesday, it was Barrett and Chad who carried us, today it was Axel, Joe and Ben.”

With the win, MSU improved their record to 90-48-4 on the year.

In his best performance of the season, senior Axel Boasson wrapped up his regular season with a tie for fourth place. The Iceland native turned in a 1-over-par 145 in Madison, finishing only four strokes shy of winning his first collegiate tournament.

Fellow senior Joe Sakulpolphaisan joined Boasson in the Top 10, after turning in a 2-over-par 146 for the tourney. Sakulpolphaisan finished with a tie for seventh place, earning the third Top-10 card of his career in the process.

At 29th overall was senior Chad Ramey and sophomore Ben Wood. The duo turned in an 8-over-par 152 at the BancorpSouth Intercollegiate.

Finishing only a stroke behind Ramey and Wood was senior Barrett Edens. In his first event since claiming co-medalist, the senior fired off a 9-over-par 153 to finish tied for 35th overall.

Heavy rains postponed the opening round until noon on Monday, forcing tournament officials to shorten the Intercollegiate into 36 holes.

Homan’s squad will head to St. Simons Island, Ga., on April 25-27 for the Southeastern Conference Championship. The Bulldogs finished fifth last season after shooting a 26-over-par 866.
