COLUMBIA, Mo. – After wrapping up the 2014 regular season on Sunday, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team will begin postseason play on Wednesday, as the Bulldogs face No. 53 LSU at 10 a.m. CT in the first round of the SEC Championship, being hosted by Missouri.
The Bulldogs (9-14, 1-12 SEC) fell to LSU 4-1 in Baton Rouge on March 21 in the teams’ only meeting this season. MSU claimed the doubles point in that match, but the Tigers responded with four singles victories to earn the win.
State is led by sophomore Georgiana Patrasc, who jumped up 10 places in the latest ITA singles rankings to No. 56 on Tuesday. Patrasc is 13-4 in dual matches this season and 6-2 in the SEC. The doubles tandem of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran also moved up 10 spots to No. 46 in the ITA doubles rankings, and that duo enters postseason play with a 6-4 dual match and SEC record.
LSU finished the regular season at 12-12 overall and 3-10 in the SEC. Abigail Owens leads the Tigers with a 12-6 dual match record and a 7-3 mark in the SEC, and clinched the win over MSU in their regular season meeting. Skylar Holloway is also 10-3 in dual matches and 4-2 in the SEC. LSU is led in doubles by the duo of Gabrielle Otero and Owens, currently 8-3 in dual matches and 3-3 in SEC play.
“We have lost a lot of tough matches lately,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “(But) I feel like we could salvage our season to some degree with a strong showing at the SEC Championships this week.”
