STARKVILLE, Miss. – Mississippi State plays its next-to-last non-conference game of the season Wednesday, traveling to No. 15/16 South Alabama. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. CT.
The Bulldogs enter Wednesday with a 30-12 record, which is the third-best 42-game mark in program history, just one victory behind the 2000 and 2008 squads. MSU has picked up 27 non-conference wins already this season. One more would tie for the most since 2008 as that squad also claimed 28 non-league victories.
Mississippi State and South Alabama have played four times, all since the beginning of the 2009 campaign, and are even at 2-2 in the series. MSU won the first two meetings, 5-2 on April 8, 2009, and 7-2 on Feb. 9, 2012. The Jaguars have answered with wins in the last two contests, 3-2 on Feb. 7, 2013, and 3-0 on May 18, 2013.
The last meeting proved to be the 2013 campaign’s final contest for the Bulldogs as South Alabama eliminated MSU from the NCAA Mobile Regional last spring. In that game, Jaguar pitcher Farish Beard limited Mississippi State to one hit and three walks while striking out 14. An unearned run in the second and two runs in the third provided all the offense South Alabama needed. Julie Moss led the Jaguar offense with two hits, a run scored and one batted in while Logan Foulks tallied the Bulldogs’ lone hit.
Senior Sam Lenahan has enjoyed success in games versus South Alabama as she owns a.429 batting average (four-for-seven) with two runs batted in, three walks and a .600 on-base percentage in three career contests versus the Jaguars.
MSU returns to home action Friday through Sunday as part of Super Bulldog Weekend. Mississippi State hosts Alabama for a three-game series. First pitch Friday is slated for 5 p.m. CT while the Sunday game will start at 6 p.m. and the Sunday contest at 1 p.m.
