West Point, Miss. – After a thrilling sudden-death victory at last season’s Old Waverly Collegiate Championship, host-club Mississippi State seeks to repeat as champion as they face off against 14 other squads on April 7-8, from the historic Old Waverly Golf Club.
The two-day, three round event will tee off at 8:30 a.m., on Monday with both days beginning with a shotgun start. Tuesday’s final round will begin at 9 a.m.
“We are very excited about hosting the 2014 Old Waverly Collegiate Championship and being able to showcase one of the top courses in the south,” Head coach Clay Homan said. “We have a very competitive field from eight states and several conferences. Many of these teams will qualify for post-season play next month, so it will be a good challenge for our team. We look forward to defending our title from a year ago and playing some really good golf.”
The second-annual Old Waverly Collegiate Championship will play host to 15 of the top rising teams in men’s collegiate golf. Austin Peay, Charleston Southern, Chattanooga, Cincinnati, Florida, Louisiana-Lafayette, Louisiana Tech, Memphis, Ole Miss, Southeastern Louisiana, South Alabama, Southern Miss, Troy and Wichita State will join MSU at the historic Old Waverly Golf Club.
Nine teams from this year’s field participated in post-season play last season.
The Bulldogs are seeking their third Top-5 card in a row going into Monday, with four already under their belt for the season. Homan’s squad had four Top 5’s last year before winning the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
This year’s edition of the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship will feature some familiar faces on the Maroon and White scorecard. All five Bulldogs on the MSU scorecard played in last year’s tourney, with newcomers Ben Follett-Smith, Dalton Conn and Jackson Dick making appearances as individuals at this season’s Old Waverly Collegiate Championship.
On the heels of back-to-back Top-5 cards, Ramey enters the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship hitting on all cylinders. The reigning Southeastern Conference Golfer of the Week is coming off one stellar spring break, finishing runner up (Tiger Invitational) and third (Seminole Intercollegiate) on the trip.
Of the five Bulldogs featured on the Old Waverly Collegiate Championship scorecard this season, three finished with at least a Top-15 finish at last year’s event.
Admission is free to all rounds. Fans can enter the Old Waverly Golf Club through the main gate on Old Waverly road and can access the designated parking areas for spectators by following signs.
