FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. – The No. 69 Mississippi State women’s tennis team wrapped up a two-match Southeastern Conference road trip Sunday afternoon, falling 4-1 at No. 46 Arkansas.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 9-9 overall and 1-7 in the SEC. Arkansas moves to 9-10 overall and 2-6 in conference action.

The Bulldogs fell behind early in doubles action, as the Razorbacks downed Bulldogs Rosie Dion and Timea Guibe 8-1 at the No. 2 spot. Then, State’s 40th-ranked duo of Alexandra Perper and Naomi Tran dropped their first SEC dual match of the spring, falling by the same score to Arkansas’ Yang Pang and Oleksandra Shkorupeieva at No. 1. Doubles play was suspended with MSU’s Petra Ferancova and Georgiana Patrasc leading 5-4 over Shannon Hudson and Sarah McLean.

Arkansas kept the momentum going into singles play, as Tran fell 6-3, 6-3 on court 5 to UA’s Surin. After MSU’s 65th-ranked Patrasc defeated Pang 6-3, 6-3 on court 1, the Razorbacks responded with another win at No. 3, where Arkansas’ McLean downed Guibe 6-4, 6-3. A 6-3, 6-4 setback for Perper to UA’s Hudson at the No. 2 position would clinch the match for the Razorbacks.

Singles play was suspended with MSU’s Dion trailing 6-3, 5-3 in the second set and Bulldog Ferancova down 6-0, 6-7, 1-0 after forcing a third set on court 6.

“We simply needed to play better tennis to overcome the indoor fast court conditions,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “We fought hard and almost gave ourselves a chance to pull off a big comeback win but it was just too little, too late.”

Mississippi State will return to action on Sunday, Mar. 30, as the Bulldogs host their in-state rival No. 46 Ole Miss. The Rebels (10-5 overall, 4-4 SEC) will enter the match coming off of a 4-1 win at LSU.
