STARKVILLE, Miss. – For the second time in three weeks, Mississippi State redshirt junior left-hander Ross Mitchell was named Southeastern Conference Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced Monday. With the honor, Mitchell became the fourth player in school history to earn the accolade twice in the same season, joining Jeff Brantley (1985, twice), Alan Johnson (2003, three times) and Chris Stratton (2012, twice).

“I am thankful to represent Mississippi State University and most importantly my savior Jesus Christ,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell put MSU on his back March 15 at Georgia with his first career complete game. Going up against a red-hot UGA squad which was riding a season-high 11-game winning streak and averaging 10.9 runs per game in its previous seven contests, the March 3 Co-SEC Pitcher of the Week gave up just one run to UGA on the Red and Black’s home field. Of Mitchell’s 27 outs recorded, only one came through the air, with the southpaw striking out five and forcing 19 ground balls, including two double plays.

“The defense behind me, Zack Randolph’s leadership behind the plate and the trust of the coaches made it easy for me to have fun and relax,” Mitchell said. “I cannot do anything without those key ingredients.”

In holding hitters to a .138 batting average in his second career start (first since 2012), the All-American picked up his third win of the season, lowering his earned run average to 1.50. The televised victory was MSU’s first win at Georgia since 2007, snapping a nine-game losing streak in Athens. With the momentum from Mitchell’s triumph, MSU won game two of Saturday’s doubleheader as well, giving the Maroon and White its first series win at Georgia since 1997.

In addition to his weekly honor from the league, Mitchell was also named the National Player of the Day for March 15 by Perfect Game.

Fans can watch Mitchell and his teammates Friday night against No. 3 Vanderbilt at Dudy Noble Field. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT, with the game being televised on CSS and ESPN3.
