STARKVILLE, Miss. – After closing out their 2014 non-conference slate with four straight victories, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team (8-2) will begin Southeastern Conference play this weekend, as the Bulldogs travel to No. 10 Alabama on Friday (5 p.m.) and No. 23 Auburn on Sunday (1 p.m.).
Seniors Alexandra Perper and Roseline Dion head into SEC play unbeaten in singles, with both players holding a combined 15-0 start to the dual match season. Sophomore Georgiana Patrasc heads into the weekend ranked No. 93 by the ITA and is 7-2 to start the season. Freshmen Timea Guibe and Rosalinda Calderon will be competing in their first career SEC contests.
Alabama is led on their roster by several ranked players, including 59th-ranked Maya Jansen, who has started the season 8-3. 62nd-ranked Emily Zabor has also gotten off to an impressive start and is 8-4 entering the weekend.
Auburn is paced by 21st-ranked Pleun Burgmans, who has a 3-4 dual match record to start the season. Burgmans, along with doubles partner Emily Flickinger, are also ranked No. 15 by the ITA.
“The SEC is always strong,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “We’re sort of heading into the weekend as the underdog, but we’ve done a good job with our non-conference play and these girls have worked really hard all semester. They’ve gotten themselves in as good of a position as they can be in going into this weekend and starting SEC play.”
