Ally McDonald In Top 15 After 36 Holes In Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate

NEW ORLEANS, La. – After rain suspended Monday’s round, the Mississippi State women’s golf team battled the damp conditions for 36 holes on Monday for the opening two rounds of the Allstate Sugar Bowl Intercollegiate, with Ally McDonald placing in the top-15.

The Bulldogs fired back-to-back 299 rounds to card a 22-over-par 598 36-hole score at the English Turn Golf and Country Club.

“While we did not play our best, this is a top-3 field of collegiate golf,” fourth-year head coach Ginger Brown-Lemm said. “Our goal of extending our top-10 finish record is well within reach. We are going to work very hard out there tomorrow to give ourselves every opportunity.”

Pacing MSU was All-American McDonald who fired an even-par 72 morning round followed by a 1-under-par 71 to earn a share of 12th at 1-under par 143. McDonald notched four birdies in that round including a birdie-par-par-birdie stretch to close out the first 18 holes.

The Fulton, Miss., native added three more birdies in her afternoon round to post seven birdies after 36 holes. She will have one more round to secure her fifth top-25 finish of the season.

Freshman Jessica Peng turned in the second best score for the Maroon and White at 6-over-par 150 after two rounds. Peng followed up a bogey on the 17th hole with a birdie-par-birdie stretch to register a 74 in her opening round.     

Playing in her first team event since February, Blaise Carabello posted rounds of 77 and 75 to head into Tuesday’s final round at 8-over-par 152. Rica Tse closed out her afternoon round with a birdie to end the day at 9-over-par 153.

Mary Langdon Gallagher rounded out the Bulldog lineup with a 36-hole score of 161.

No. 2 UCLA is positioned atop the leaderboard at 14-under-par 562. Erynne Lee of the Bruins and Tonje Daffinrud of Denver are co-leaders after two rounds at 7-under-par 137 each. .

Tuesday’s final shotgun round will tee off at 8 a.m. CST with Brown-Lemm’s squad paired with Baylor and rivals Ole Miss.
