STARKVILLE, Miss. – The Mississippi State women’s tennis team wrapped up their 2014 non-conference slate at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre on Saturday, with a pair of 7-0 victories over Alabama A&M and Alcorn State.

With the two wins, the Bulldogs improve to 8-2 on the season and 6-0 at home.

Scoring began in the Alabama A&M contest with the Bulldogs sweeping doubles. After Petra Ferancova and Naomi Tran won their match on No. 3 by default, Rosalinda Calderon and Rosie Dion would clinch the doubles point for State, picking up an 8-0 win on court 2 over Alabama A&M’s tandem of Leslie Ekpe and Khyana Price. The MSU duo of Timea Guibe and Alexandra Perper would also pick up an 8-0 win on court 1 over Orianna Rodriguez and Jessica Taylor.

Singles action began with two more default victories for Mississippi State on courts 5 and 6, before Calderon would clinch the match with a 6-0, 6-0 decision on No. 4 over Price. State’s Georgiana Patrasc, ranked 72nd nationally, claimed a 6-0, 6-0 win of her own on court 1, moving her to 6-2 in dual match play this spring. Perper and Guibe would also pick 6-0, 6-0 wins on courts 2 and 3, respectively.

The second match against Alcorn State would begin much like the previous one for the Bulldogs, as Mississippi State clinched the doubles point after a pair of 8-1 victories. The duo of Guibe and Perper picked up the first of the two wins on court 1 over ASU’s Sumeera Kamil and Kersten Vanem. Calderon and Ferancova captured the second win and clincher over Aakanksha Punj and Chan Rutherford on No. 3. Patrasc and Tran would also collect an 8-2 decision on court 2 over Kate Potapova and Merlin Tipp.

Calderon would begin the scoring in singles action by taking a 6-1, 6-0 decision on court 6 over Alcorn State’s Patricia Normand. Patrasc would follow with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on No. 2 over Kamil. The match would then be clinched thanks to a 6-0, 6-0 shutout victory on court 3 by Guibe over Punj.

Perper, Tran, and Ferancova would also collect wins on courts 1, 4, and 5, respectively. Perper’s win moved her to 7-0 on the season, matching her best career start set back in the spring of 2012.

“The girls have done a good job taking care of business,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “There’s no doubt that our competition will get tougher through the rest of the season in SEC play, but I like what I’m seeing. We’re doing a lot of things well, and we’re just going to have to carry that into next weekend and beyond and be able to do it with full confidence.”

The Bulldogs will begin their conference schedule on the road next weekend, as they travel to No. 14 Alabama on Friday, Feb. 28, and No. 19 Auburn on Sunday, Mar. 2.
