STARKVILLE, Miss. - After a five-game road trip to Boca Raton, Fla., the Mississippi State softball team (10-0) returns home to open a four-contest home stand with Wednesday’s 3 p.m. CT clash against Central Arkansas (3-7).
MSU’s 10-0 start to the campaign is the third best in program history, joining the 2008 (11-0) and 2006 (16-0) squads as the only ones to open 10-0 or better.
As a result of the hot start, the Bulldogs received three votes in this week’s USA Softball/ESPN.com softball poll. It is the first time MSU has picked up votes in any poll since April 23, 2013, when it had four in the USA Today/NFCA poll. It is the first time gaining votes in the ESPN.com rankings since registering four in the March 19, 2013, edition of the poll.
Individually, freshman Alexis Silkwood set the Mississippi State freshman record with 12 strikeouts in the second game at FAU last Thursday and was rewarded with the SEC Freshman of the Week award on Monday. She is the first Bulldog to receive the league’s weekly rookie honors since Erin Nesbit (April 26) and Kylie Vry (Feb. 15) were selected in 2010. Silkwood is the 10th freshman in Mississippi State history to earn the accolade.
Silkwood fanned at least two in an inning five times in the contest and she surrendered just one hit, a leadoff single in the fifth inning. The 12 whiffs were also tied for the 10th most in a game in program history.
Wednesday will feature $2 popcorn and $2 hot dogs from the concession stand at the MSU Softball Stadium.
The Bulldogs continue the home stand this weekend with a three-game series against Iowa (3-6). The Friday and Saturday games begin at 3 p.m. while the Sunday contest is set for a 10 a.m. first pitch.
