HOUSTON, Texas – Alexandra Perper and Rosie Dion both picked up singles victories to remain undefeated on the season, but Mississippi State’s women’s tennis team was unable to pick up the team win, as MSU dropped a 5-2 decision to No. 66 Houston Sunday to close out a weekend road trip.

With the loss, the Bulldogs fall to 4-2 on the season and 1-2 against ITA-ranked opponents.

The Cougars set the tone early, claiming the doubles point. MSU’s Dion and Petra Ferancova dropped their match 8-4 on court 3 to Celia Fraser and Charlotte Phillips. Despite an 8-5 win on court 2 by State’s Georgiana Patrasc and Naomi Tran over Maria Andrea Cardenas and Rocio Martin, Houston would clinch the doubles point on court 1, as Timea Guibe and Alexandra Perper dropped their match 8-5 to Elena Kordolaimi and Despoina Vogasari.

Houston would carry its momentum into singles play, as the Cougars picked up three straight singles victories to clinch the win. The 72nd-ranked Patrasc would be the first Bulldog to fall, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision on court 1 to Vogasari. Guibe followed with a 6-0, 6-2 setback on No. 3 to Fraser. The match would be clinched on Court 5, as MSU’s Tran fell 6-0, 6-3 to Phillips.

“We let the doubles point slip away,” said head coach Daryl Greenan. “That affected us at the beginning of singles. Houston took advantage of the momentum and we just couldn’t recover.”

The Bulldogs did pull out two of the last three matches on court, as seniors Rosie Dion and Alexandra Perper won their matches on courts 2 and 4, respectively, each to remain unbeaten this spring. Perper ousted UH’s Kordolaimi 7-5, 6-2 while Dion rallied from a set down to win 3-6, 7-6, 1-0(9) over Cougar Cardenas.

“In the end, our seniors played like seniors,” said Greenan. “They’re doing a great job this season and are finding ways to win.”

The Bulldogs will return home to host Jackson State in a doubleheader on Wednesday, Feb. 19. The first match is scheduled to begin at 3 p.m., with the second match slated for a 6 p.m. start. Live stats will be available on
