First-Year Hurlers Impress In Sunday’s Scrimmage
Starkville, Miss. – In a battle of freshman starting pitchers, Mississippi State right-handers Austin Sexton and Dakota Hudson were impressive Sunday afternoon in MSU’s ninth intrasquad scrimmage of the spring. Hudson’s Black squad defeated Sexton’s Gray team by a score of 3-1 in the seven-inning affair.
In five innings on the bump, Sexton gave up no runs on two hits with three strikeouts on 53 pitches. Hudson tossed four scoreless frames, yielding six hits with two K’s and a walk on 60 pitches. All-American junior closer Jonathan Holder earned the save by retiring the side in order in the final inning.
Deadlocked in a scoreless affair in the top of the sixth, Gray junior outfielder Jake Vickerson scored the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly to right by preseason All -SEC first baseman Wes Rea.
Trailing by one in the bottom of the sixth, senior outfielder Derrick Armstrong jumpstarted Black’s offense with a leadoff infield single. After stealing second, the speedster moved to third on a groundout by freshman first baseman Dylan Ingram. Fellow freshman Brent Rooker then hit a chopper over the third baseman’s head down the line, plating Armstrong and sliding into second for a two-bagger.
Sophomore outfielder Jacob Robson joined Rooker on the base paths with a walk, before both men advanced on a sacrifice bunt by senior outfielder Demarcus Henderson. With two in scoring position, Rooker scored on a wild pitch. In attempt to throw out Rooker, the catcher’s throw to the plate sailed high, allowing Robson to tap the dish as well.
