STARKVILLE, Miss. – Coming off consecutive NCAA Tournament bids, the Mississippi State softball team gears up for a third-straight trip with this weekend’s season-opening Bulldog Kickoff Classic.

MSU opens the season Friday at 3 p.m. CT against Mississippi Valley State before taking on Northern Kentucky at 5. Saturday the Bulldogs face Northern Kentucky at 12:30 p.m. and Jacksonville State at 3 p.m. The team finishes the weekend with Jacksonville State at 1:30 p.m. Sunday.

The Bulldogs ended 2013 with an overall record of 33-24, marking consecutive years with 30 or more victories for the first time since 1998-2008. The squad was also named one of three 2013 Easton Teams of the Year, joining Women’s College World Series participants Florida and Texas.

“We have some high expectations of this year’s group,” head coach Vann Stuedeman said. “We are loaded with seniors and we have a strong freshman class. I look for us to make a little bit of noise this season.”

Mississippi State returns six position starters and three pitchers while welcoming seven newcomers to the squad.

With all the returning talent, depth will certainly be a key for this year’s squad.

“We have a lot of people who are really versatile and can do a lot of things,” senior outfielder Jessica Offutt said. “The freshman class is very athletic. They’re very talented and work really hard. We do have a lot of depth and that’s very important.”

“Depth really makes you have to compete for your spot,” senior catcher/infielder Sam Lenahan said. “On any given day, any one of us could get our spot taken by somebody else on the team. It really gives us that extra motivation to keep us working that much harder.”

All of this weekend’s MSU games will be streamed live on HailStateTV and have free audio-only streams.
