Starkville, Miss. – With Opening Day less than two weeks away, several news items regarding the Mississippi State baseball team were announced Monday.

The Maroon and White earned another top-five preseason honor Monday with a No. 4 ranking in the 17th annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Division I preseason poll.

Junior right-handed closer Jonathan Holder was named a 2014 Baseball America Preseason Third-Team All-American, the publication announced Monday. Baseball America annually polls major league scouting directors to vote on the team and make their selections based on performance, talent and professional potential.

As of Feb. 3, the MSU ticket office has sold a school-record 5,644 season tickets, surpassing the previous record of 5,632 set in 2010.

General admission season tickets as well as single-game tickets for the Bulldogs’ 124th season are on sale now at the MSU ticket office. Fans can also purchase tickets by calling 1-888-GO-DAWGS or by visiting HailState.com/tickets. General admission season tickets are $200 each, while single-game tickets are $5 for non-conference games and $10 for SEC battles.

Tickets for the April 8 game against Southern Miss and the April 22 contest against Ole Miss at Trustmark Park in Pearl, Miss., are currently on sale and may be purchased in person at the Trustmark Park Box Office or by calling 888-BRAVES4. Fans may also purchase tickets online through Ticketmaster. Mississippi State will be the home team in both games and will be located in the third base dugout.

This past Saturday, 1,018 Diamond Dawg fans attended MSU’s annual First Pitch Banquet at the Palmeiro Center on campus. Highlight by guest speaker and three-time MLB all-star Roy Oswalt, the attendance doubled 2013’s total of 509 and was 356 more than the 2012 total.

BULLDOGS IN PROFESSIONAL BASEBALL

The St. Louis Cardinals extended a non-roster invitation to former MSU catcher Ed Easley (2005-07), who in 2007 earned All-America honors en route to winning the 2007 Johnny Bench Award. Easley played last season with Triple-A Reno of the Arizona Diamondbacks organization, before becoming a free agent this summer and signing with the 2013 National League champions.

The Pittsburgh Pirates signed former MSU catcher Mitch Slauter to a minor league contract this past week. Slauter became the ninth Bulldog from the 2013 national finalist squad to sign a professional contract.

SERVING OUR COUNTRY

Former MSU left-handed pitcher Tim Statz graduated this past Friday from Marine Corps boot camp at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, Calif. Statz lettered at MSU in 2011 and was a member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll. The southpaw was part of a team which won the 2011 NCAA Atlanta Regional, tossing 21 1/3 innings in 14 appearances (two starts).
