Starkville, Miss. – Mississippi State baseball was ranked No. 4 in the 2014 USA Today Coaches’ Preseason Top-25, released Monday by the publication. Four of the 31 Division I coaches participating in the poll voted the Maroon and White first overall, joining No. 1 Cal State Fullerton and No. 2 LSU as the only schools to receive first-place votes.
Oregon State, who MSU eliminated with two wins in the 2013 College World Series, came in at No. 3, with the rest of the top 10 being rounded out by Florida State, Virginia, Oregon, Vanderbilt, North Carolina State and UCLA.
The poll comes two days after head coach John Cohen’s program was placed in the top-10 in Baseball America and Perfect Game’s preseason polls. Perfect Game had the Diamond Dawgs sixth, while Baseball America had the Maroon and White eighth. In late December, Collegiate Baseball listed MSU second in its preseason rankings.
This Monday, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association will release its first Top-25 of the season, marking the last national preseason poll.
State’s 2014 lid-lifter is Friday, Feb. 14, 2014, as the Bulldogs begin their 124th season with a 4 p.m. Opening Day contest against Hofstra.
