STARKVILLE, Miss. – Head coach John Cohen and the Mississippi State baseball team were presented with the 2014 Crystal Pineapple Tourism Award Monday night at the Greater Starkville Development Partnership Annual Banquet. The award is given each year to an entity which has greatly contributed to tourism and the quality of life in Starkville.
Speaking to a capacity crowd of more than 350 local business leaders at the Hunter Henry Center on the campus of MSU, associate head coach Butch Thompson accepted the honor on behalf of the baseball program.
The presenter of the award, GSDP chief executive officer Jennifer Gregory, said the Diamond Dawgs received the accolade because of their significant contribution to tourism revenue, renewed excitement in the community and notoriety they brought to Starkville as a result of their College World Series’ run.
State’s 2014 lid-lifter is Friday, Feb. 14, 2013, as the Bulldogs begin their 124th season with a 4 p.m. Opening Day contest against Hofstra.
