Starkville, Miss. – Seven different players for Team Black recorded a hit as Black escaped with a 5-3 win in Mississippi State’s second seven-inning scrimmage of 2014 Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field.
“I feel like we are off to a good start,” head coach John Cohen said. “We still have a long way to go. We have great leadership on this club and our older group has done a great job moving the younger group to the next level.”
The game started off with a pitchers’ duel between freshmen starters Dakota Hudson and Austin Sexton, who each tossed two scoreless innings. The duo gave way to junior lefty Lucas Laster and freshman southpaw Vance Tatum, who combined for 2.2 scoreless stanzas. Sophomore righty John Marc Shelly also impressed on the bump, retiring all eight batters he faced in relief.
On offense, senior third baseman Alex Detz went 2-for-3 with two runs, an RBI double and a walk. Also collecting multiple hits were redshirt junior Zack Randolph (2-for-4, 2 RBIs) and redshirt freshman Cody Brown (2-for-2, 2 runs). Joining Detz and Randolph with RBIs were freshman Joey Swinarski (1-for-2, 1 RBI), fellow freshman Reid Humphreys (1-for-3, RBI) and sophomore Kyle Hann (1-for-3, RBI).
