STARKVILLE, Miss. - In its first match of the 2014 dual season, the Mississippi State women’s tennis team cruised to a 6-1 opening win over Alabama State on Sunday at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre.

The Bulldogs kicked off the match by sweeping Alabama State in doubles action.  The duo of Rosie Dion and Petra Ferancova was the first to finish, defeating Nathalie Lorenco and Giovanna Lombardi 6-0 on court 3. Georgiana Patrasc and Naomi Tran quickly followed suit at the No. 2 slot, sealing the double point with a 6-0 decision over Hornets Brankica Orlovic and Irina Cvijovic. State’s Alexandra Perper and Timea Guibe closed out doubles action with a 6-1 victory over Arantxia Wijngaarde and Pauline Denis on court 1.

Scoring in singles began on court 6, where an injury forced MSU’s Ferancova to retire in her match to Lombardi, trailing 2-1 in the first set. From there, it was all Mississippi State, as the senior Dion blanked ASU’s Nathalie Lorenco at No. 5.  The true freshman Guibe grabbed her first career dual match victory as a Bulldog with a 6-0, 6-2 win over Cvijovic on court 3, while Tran and Perper also notched impressive wins, defeating Orlovic (6-1, 6-0) and Denis (6-2, 6-1) on courts 4 and 2, respectively.

The most contested match of the day came from the 84th-ranked Patrasc and her opponent, Wijngaarde, at the No. 1 position. Patrasc won the first set, but fell behind early and dropped the second to force a super tiebreaker to decide the match. In the end, Patrasc survived her first test of the season, defeating Wijngaarde 6-1, 3-6, 1-0(4).

“We played solid,” said Mississippi State head coach Daryl Greenan. “We started out well in doubles, we served well, and we executed. We carried our momentum into singles. Georgiana was challenged at number one, but she came out on top and won the tiebreaker. Overall, it was a great start to the season.”

With the win, the Bulldogs move to 1-0 on the season, while Alabama State falls to 0-1. The Bulldogs will resume play next weekend in the ITA Kickoff Classic at Texas A&M, with matches scheduled for both Saturday and Sunday.  State will meet the seventh-ranked host Aggies on Saturday in the first round in College Station.
