STARKVILLE, Miss. - After a full week of spring semester classes, the Mississippi State softball program held its first official practice of the spring season Sunday afternoon.
The Bulldogs have nearly three weeks to prepare for their opener, against Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 7 at 3 p.m. inside the MSU Softball Stadium.
Mississippi State made its 10th NCAA Softball Tournament appearance and second consecutive trip last spring. The Bulldogs earned their first postseason victory since 2008 with a 2-1 win against Mississippi Valley State and was named one of three 2013 Easton Teams of the Year, joining Women’s College World Series participants Florida and Texas.
Individually, a trio of Bulldogs received National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-South Region Second Team honors, marking the fourth time in program history having three or more selections.
Helping lead this year's squad will be seven seniors, including last year’s NFCA All-Region picks Logan Foulks, Sam Lenahan and Alison Owen. In 2013, Foulks led the squad with 53 hits, 13 home runs and 103 total bases. Lenahan enters her senior campaign fourth in Mississippi State history in career home runs (20) and walks (101) while standing sixth in game-winning runs batted in (17), tied for sixth in intentional walks (two), ninth in runs batted in (104) and tied for 10th in doubles (31). Owen established Mississippi State single-season records in strikeouts (250) and strikeouts per seven innings (8.83) while ranking sixth in shutouts (five) and saves (five) and tied for 10th in victories (17) during the 2013 campaign.
Mississippi State will play 27 home games this spring, beginning with the Bulldog Kickoff Classic Feb. 7-9.
