It’s the fourth Liberty Bowl appearance for the Bulldogs (1-2) and first since 2007. This year also marks the 50th anniversary of MSU’s first appearance in the Liberty Bowl, a 16-12 win against North Carolina State when the game was played in Philadelphia, Pa.

Overall, MSU is 9-7 in bowl games and making their fourth-straight appearance in the postseason for the first time in program history.

“These seniors are doing something no one else at Mississippi State has ever done, and that’s play in four bowls,” said fifth-year MSU coach Dan Mullen, who is 3-1 in post-season play. “This is a great reward for all their hard work, and we are facing a Rice team that’s had a special year.”

Mississippi State comes to Memphis sporting a 6-6 ledger after closing out the year with wins against Arkansas and Ole Miss to become bowl eligible.

Rice (10-3) punched its ticket to Memphis after winning the Conference USA championship with a 41-24 win against Marshall in the title game.
