STARKVILLE, Miss. - Mississippi State softball head coach Vann Stuedeman announced the signing of Virginia standout Calyn Adams Wednesday afternoon. Adams was a member of the 2012 adidas Futures Team and was selected as a varsity team co-captain as a junior and senior. She is the third member of the 2014 signing class, joining Holly Ward and Claire Stucker.
“What I really, really like about Calyn is that she is a quality person,” Stuedeman said. “She’s going to come here, do the right thing, make great grades, get a degree and along the way she’s going to make some noise both offensively and defensively on the field.
“Calyn is a catcher and can also play a corner infield position,” Stuedeman added. “She has a good arm and a nice lefty swing.”
Adams, of Colonial Heights, Va., is home schooled and played four years of varsity softball in the Central Virginia Homeschool Athletic Association (CVHAA). Her family has played an integral role with her high school softball team. When she was 9 years old, her family purchased a softball field near Richmond for the CVHAA Patriots. At the time there was one field, a storage garage and a small building. The area has been expanded into a complex with the addition of a second field and a building for indoor hitting. It is now the home field for Adams’ varsity squad.
"I prayerfully considered all of my options and I felt this is where God was leading me," Adams said on why she chose to become a Bulldog. "I also loved the excitement and energy of the campus.”
Adams, who will make her Bulldog debut in the 2014-15 season, has gained additional softball experience with the NC Lady Lightning. In the summer of 2013, the squad placed ninth in the 18U Premier Girls Fastpitch national championship. The team also claimed the 2013 Louisville Slugger Independence Day Tournament title in July. In her first year with the club, in 2012, she helped the team make a trip to the ASA 16U nationals in Montgomery, Ala. Softball also runs in the family, as Adams’ sister Carly is a sophomore middle infielder at Longwood University.
