STARKVILLE, Miss. – Redshirt junior first baseman Wes Rea and junior leadoff hitter Jake Vickerson both drove in in a pair as White picked up a 7-5 Game 4 victory against Maroon to capture the 2013 Bulldog World Series Sunday afternoon at Dudy Noble Field. The Mississippi State baseball team will host its final seven-inning scrimmage of the fall this Tuesday, Nov. 19, at 5 p.m. Admission is free.
Rea, a team captain for White, led his hand-picked team with a two-run home run, two runs and a walk. With his older brother Nick in the stands, Jake Vickerson ended his impressive weekend with a 2-for-4 performance, tallying two RBIs, two runs and a stolen base. Senior Demarcus Henderson (3-for-4) and junior Matthew Britton (2-for-3) also collected multiple hits Sunday for White.
For Maroon, redshirt junior Zack Randolph (1-for-4) had a two-run home run and fellow junior catcher Cody Walker went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a run. Sophomore Kyle Hann joined Walker with a pair of hits, going 2-for-4 at the plate.
The starting pitcher battle between Maroon junior right-hander Trevor Fitts and White freshman righty Dakota Hudson provided fans with yet another Sunday pitchers’ duel between the two, as both hurlers traded zeros in the inning columns for the first three frames.
White finally broke open the scoreless tie in the fourth when Vickerson knocked a leadoff base knock up the middle, stole second base and eventually scored on a Brett Pirtle two-out double the opposite way. Pirtle wasted no time finding home plate himself, when Rea launched a two-run bomb over the 376-foot marker in the left-center field gap for Rea’s second home run of the fall.
Trailing by three, Maroon responded when Walker drew a leadoff walk and Randolph connected on a two-run blast over the wall in left to cut the deficit to one.
Putting the game and the series out of reach, the visitors poured on another three spot in the fifth, which began when true freshman Reid Humphreys hit a leadoff double to the gap in right field. Following two quick outs, sophomore Jacob Robson walked then advanced a base along with Humphreys on a wild pitch. With two in scoring position, Vickerson sliced a liner over the head of Maroon’s shortstop for a clutch two-out, two-RBI single, expanding the lead to four.
Maroon continued to battle back in the fifth when senior C.T. Bradford singled to right with one out, moved to second on a walk issued to senior Alex Detz and scored on a RBI double down the left-field line by redshirt freshman Cody Brown.
White answered the run in the top of the sixth when Rea scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Dylan Ingram. The final two runs of the game came courtesy of Maroon when freshman Brent Rooker scored on an error and Brown tapped the dish on a wild pitch.
